Are You Suffering From Sleep Deprivation? Know The Signs and Get Some Shut Eye!

Sleep is just as important as food, water, and air for humans. However, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, one-third of Americans aren't getting enough sleep, a shocking number that has grown over time. Lack of sleep and sleep deprivation can cause major damage to your mind and body, and it's much worse than just feeling tired throughout the day.

There are two reasons you may not be getting a healthy amount of sleep - insomnia and sleep deprivation. Insomnia is when a person has trouble falling asleep and then staying asleep throughout the night, even when they have the time and opportunity to get a healthy night of rest. Sleep deprivation is when a person does not get enough sleep at night on a regular basis, which should be between 7-9 hours.

Both insomnia and sleep deprivation can have a major impact on your overall health, including changes in appetite that cause weight gain, memory loss, slow cognitive function, fatigue, depression, mood swings, and a weakened immune system. It can also affect your appearance, causing dark circles and bags under your eyes, and dehydrated skin. Furthermore, the lack of sleep is bad for your heart health.

There are things you can do to help get a good night of sleep. Try to create a sleep schedule and stick to it. This means, try to get into bed around the same time every night and wake up around the same time every day. Your body will get set on a routine. Another good thing to do to improve sleep is to cut off-screen time early. Give yourself enough time before bed to let your eyes relax and avoid any screen, including your phone. You can also create a relaxing environment by reading before bed, drinking tea, or listening to soothing music. Including exercise into your daily routine, and eating a healthy diet, can help improve sleep patterns as well.

If your sleep patterns do not improve, call your doctor and ask about a hormone test. Your body may have a hormonal imbalance.
