Is Your Hormone Imbalance Causing You Wrinkles?

We all age. Our skin changes and develops lines, wrinkles, and it also begins to lose elasticity and change color and texture. These changes to your skin can sometimes be due to outside factors such as sun exposure and the environment. However, more commonly as we age, especially for women experiencing menopause, these changes are caused by loss of collagen, cellular changes, and hormonal imbalance.

Throughout your life, your hormones will have control of your skin. Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone will control the human body, and decide how your skin will behave. This includes your teenage years dealing with acne, all the way to adulthood when you start experiencing the effects of aging skin.

So, what exactly are these hormones and what are their roles? Estrogen is the primary sex hormone and helps regulate the reproductive system. Testosterone, although commonly known as the male hormone and is the main male hormone, is produced in the ovaries and the adrenal glands in women. Testosterone helps a woman's libido and also helps women produce muscle mass and strong bones. Progesterone plays an important role in pregnancy. Together, these three hormones work together to keep a woman’s body strong and functioning properly.

Of these three, the most relevant to aging skin is estrogen. Estrogen helps maintain the thickness of our skin by preventing the natural decline of collagen. Collagen gives the skin its strength and structure and also plays a role in the replacement of dead skin cells. By increasing hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharides, estrogen helps maintain the moisture level of aging skin. Both hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharides are responsible for hydration, lubrication of joints, cell strength, wound healing, and elasticity.

There are ways you can prevent and treat aging skin. These include wearing sunscreen daily, keeping your skin moisturized, seeking treatments like Botox, and Hormone Replacement Therapy.

In an article by ScienceDaily.com, Yale School of Medicine researchers report "long-term hormone therapy used earlier in menopause is associated with fewer wrinkles and less skin rigidity in postmenopausal women." Hugh S. Taylor, M.D., associate professor in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences at Yale School of Medicine also states “We don’t believe hormone therapy will make wrinkles melt away once they’re already there, but the results of our study show that hormone therapy can prevent them. Hormone therapy makes wrinkles less severe and keeps skin more elastic.”

HRT can help keep your skin firm, supple, and wrinkle-free! Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a therapy to help with anti-aging health and longevity, as well as getting your hormones back in balance. This practice is designed to help both women and men as they go through things like menopause and loss of testosterone. HRT incorporates individualized doses of hormones that emulate nearly identically those each patient had as a younger woman or younger man.
