Menopause: What You Need to Know

The definition of Menopause is, “the end of menstruation.” This end of menstruation for women results in the body’s inability to produce estrogen and progesterone. The loss of these two hormones can cause women to suffer from a myriad of symptoms, many very troublesome. Some of the more common symptoms related to menopause are:

  1. Hot flushes
  2. Night sweats
  3. Mood disturbances / depression / forgetfulness
  4. Vaginal dryness / urinary infections / pain during intercourse
  5. Sleep Disturbance
  6. Irritability

Menopause occurs due to a woman’s ovaries losing their ability to function naturally as they age. As the ovaries age, they lose their response to two hormones, Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and Luteinising Hormone (LH). When this occurs, the ovaries produce less estrogen, eventually causing a woman’s period to stop. It is believed that most women, about 70%, will suffer from negative symptoms related to menopause during their lifetime. The average age most women will become menopausal is 45 to 55 years old, although each woman is different in their age of onset. Menopause can also occur due to the surgically induced process of removal of the ovaries. Whatever the cause for menopause in women, the symptoms may be the same. Menopause may also bring more serious health risks for women. One example is Osteoporosis, a thinning and weakening of the bones due to lower estrogen levels in women. When women are younger, estrogen in their body helps to keep bones strong and healthy. Aging and the loss of estrogen in the body as menopause occurs can cause significant changes in bone mass and density for women.

What Can Be Done to Relieve Symptoms of Menopause?

The loss of hormones after menopause can be corrected, and in many cases help women lead a symptom-free life. The use of natural hormones has been shown to be a healthy choice for many women in overcoming menopausal symptoms. Natural hormones, those that are non-synthetic, are made from natural sources found in nature. They are compounded by pharmacies specifically in doses necessary for relief of each patient's symptoms, and as indicated by the body’s blood levels of hormones.
