Low Impact Exercises for an Aging Population

As we age, our bodies change. We can no longer bounce back quickly from simple injuries like a sprained ankle. We also naturally lose our lean muscle mass, making us more prone to injuries as well. While it's important to keep our bodies strong and healthy by exercising regularly, there are many things we can be doing in the gym that could actually be causing harm.

Exercises like running, weight training, and boxing may be a great workout, however, they are full of impact which can cause knee, hip, and joint problems. If you've struggled from knee, hip, or shoulder injuries in the past, it's best to avoid high impact exercises and stick to low impact options like swimming, rowing, and cycling.

Swimming is a great option if you're looking for a cardio workout that works your entire body. You can also go at your own pace; taking it slow or pushing yourself. Swimming also comes with many varieties so you'll never get bored as you can switch up your routine on a regular basis. Treading water and walking or jogging in the water can also count as a low impact workout.

Rowing is a high-calorie burning exercise that works your legs, core, and chest while also giving you a great cardio workout. Like swimming, you can go at your own pace while doing this exercise, either challenging yourself to push harder or taking it slow as a warm-up. With rowing, you still get the movements you would if you were doing light weight training without the high impact.

Cycling is the perfect low impact exercise for everyone. You can take a cycling class to really push yourself, or slowly cycle while reading a book or catching up on the news. Cycling gives you a good cardio workout while also working your legs and core muscles.
