Can Vitamin D Save Your Life? Some Scientists Seem to Think So

It’s not news that vitamin D is important for our health. We know that vitamin D is a critical link to a healthy immune system and regulating healthy cell division. It also supports healthy bone density. What is news, however, is that vitamin D may be the link to mortality rates in the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

According to some experts, healthy levels of vitamin D could possibly help people with COVID-19 by increasing their survival rates. A recent study by Northwestern University found that countries with higher mortality rates had lower vitamin D levels. These countries include Italy, the UK, and Spain. The study tested results and did research on 10 countries overall, including the United States.

Cytokine storm, which causes respiratory distress and death, is what seems to be responsible for what is killing those with COVID-19. Basically what’s happening in the immune system is overreacting and misdirecting its defenses in our body. Vitamin D may keep our immune systems from that overreaction, preventing complications and death from the virus.

In an article on medicalexpress.com, researcher Vadim Backham, Walter Dill Scott Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering, says that “Our analysis shows that it might be as high as cutting the mortality rate in half. It will not prevent a patient from contracting the virus, but it may reduce complications and prevent death in those who are infected."

Vitamin D deficiency is very common, yet many people will never know they are suffering from it. Low levels of Vitamin D can cause a number of alternative side effects as well, including feeling depressed, having mood swings, weight gain, chronic pain, inflammation, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, and digestion problems. Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to severe health issues like heart disease, and lower immune function.

A blood test can determine whether or not you are producing enough Vitamin D. If your test results come back that you are low or deficient, you can take steps to get back on track. Exposure to sunlight and adding certain foods into your diets like fish, eggs, and milk can help increase Vitamin D. Some people struggle to absorb Vitamin D through sun exposure and food alone, or they might not be absorbing the right amounts needed. In addition to sun exposure and a high Vitamin D diet, taking a high-quality Vitamin D supplement can increase your levels as well.
